Charl de Villiers (originally from South Africa but now living in Lake Jackson, Texas) had, despite being profoundly deaf and badly burnt, managed to realize his childhood dream of being the first of his kind to solo circumnavigate the globe. The book "Silent Voyage" authored by Maria de Villiers is the real life story of this remarkable person who had, against huge odds, managed to navigate the treacherous seas and is still facing the challenges of a hearing and unscarred society.
The author used his trip around the world as a framework to tell his tales The burning incident, the ensuing hearing loss, how he had managed to reclaim his life and to know what is and isn't meant to be.

So many poignant moments written with your heart clearly on your sleeve, a person humble, accountable, in the moment, all at once daring life and in a very raw and unfiltered way screaming back at the silence we presume, as big and loud as any of us should hope to live. Finding the very video you reference in your book is timely, I wrote in my notes “where is the footage of you climbing the mast in open seas?!”The style of chronicling your solo round the world voyage by including both your gut wrenching moments of reflection and out of my seat celebrating moments of resolve, is pure journeyman. I turned the final pages thinking .. “these defining moments I reckon is why we exist”.
You likely see more than many of us are willing, and your outlets are here in your words..pure human emotion sailing the world, recounting your brother’s passing, flirting with the ladies at port, run-ins with pirates, CReW with the best, and Chips the organizer skydiving for the World Cup to name a few... I’m humbled by, and renewed with your passion for life. Your willingness to offer up your vulnerabilities, revealing there are moments resigning yourself to your fate can bring you through the 13th, celebrating the opportunity blue skies of the 14th presents.
One of my personal proudest moments is your response to one of our skydiving videos. Feeling the bass, feeling the emotion behind the music I always hope resonates with someone. Knowing your family shared in how amazing it is to be up there, I don’t mind saying, bit of a tearful smile for me.
I’m looking forward to flying with you again, you are truly an inspiration and reminder that passion is the foundation of success, whatever and wherever that may be.

If you only read one book, read this one. If you feel life is hard read what this amazing man has accomplished after being severely burnt and as a result losing his hearing.

Charl's story is one of incredible resilience and determination. This book is an inspiration, not just for those with any sort of differing ability but for anyone facing any challenge. As a longtime sailor and owner of a sister ship to Charl's Island Time, I know that even a limited offshore passage can be challenging at times. Charl's story and his determined circumnavigation shows what the human spirit can accomplish. A great read!
This book is a great read. I know Charl from my days as a live-aboard in Port Lavaca, TX. A wonderful individual, it is because of him that I also have the bug to chase the Sun in a circumnavigation.
Really like the story and the blending of the current voyage and his personal story. Very pleasant reading of a remarkable man.
Being an AS expat myself, I could totally relate to Charl's story, especially when he was writing about the military and rugby. The way he tells his story and and reflect back to his past experiences were very smart in my opinion. Much re spect, Charl!
